English With Dena

Hi, I’m Dena!

I am a second-year master's student in the TESOL program at Columbia University. I have been tutoring English for two years and recently began teaching English as a second language to adult learners from beginner to intermediate levels. I also have been teaching at a preschool for over two years, working with children from 6 months to 5 years old. I speak English as my first language and Arabic as my second language.

When giving feedback to English as a Second Language (ESL) learners, it is important to strike a balance between providing encouragement and identifying areas for improvement. In this video, you can watch how I use error correction to support my beginner-level ESL class. I do so using the "2:1 technique", an approach where teachers give two compliments (praise) followed by one constructive criticism (error correction). This technique can help build learners' confidence while guiding their language development.

Watch Me Teach!

Scaffolding is a teaching technique that involves providing temporary support and guidance to help learners achieve their goals. In this video, watch how I scaffold students in an activity to help them learn how to politely accept and reject invitations. I start with what students know, to help them build connections between existing and new knowledge. After reading a dialogue, students are asked to identify if the speaker is accepting or rejecting the invitation. Then, they are given a list of phrases and asked to put them in the correct category. This activity will help build students’ confidence for when they are asked to write their own dialogue accepting or rejecting an invitation.

Pictionary can be an effective tool for teaching vocabulary to ESL students because it allows them to engage in active learning and to use multiple senses to learn and remember new words. In this video, you can watch how I use pictionary to teach my beginner ESL students the names of different instruments in a way that is engaging and promotes student motivation ANd creativity. Through this language-learning game, they also practice spelling and pronunciation.
